Tata Motors has renamed its upcoming hatchback, which was earlier named as Zica, as Tiago after successful end of a name hunt campaign.
Earlier this month, auto major had decided to rename its soon-to-be launched hatchback Zica in view of the outbreak of Zika virus. The company said it had announced the intent to rename the car "as the right and responsible action following the hardships caused by the virus outbreak across many countries
One might argue how Tata Motors was to know that a virus would be named after its latest brand name and that they were just plain unlucky. But that is not true. The Zika Virus was first isolated in Uganda in 1947. In fact Zika takes its name from the Zika Forest in Uganda where it was first found. The virus is spread by the day time Aedes mosquitoes. Zika is related to yellow fever, dengue, Japanese encephalitis and the West Nile virus. The CDC in the US confirms that this time the strain was first sexually transmitted in Texas.
