In South India, it is a popular custom for Hanuman devotees to offer Vada Mala (garland of fritters) to the deity on auspicious days like Hanuman Jayanti and Tuesdays. Some people pray to make 8, 16, 108 and 1008 Vadas. In Hanuman temples, it is customary to offer the Lord 108/1008/10008/100008 Vada Malas depending on the occasion/festival.
INGREDIENTS
Urad dal - 3/4th cup
Rice - 1/4th cup
Pepper – 1 Tsp
Salt - to taste
Butter or Ghee – 1 Tbsp
Hing - a pinch
Water as needed
Oil to deep fry
METHOD
- Powder urad dal and rice coarsely.
- Add pepper, salt
- Add butter or ghee.
- Blend everything thoroughly.
- Sprinkle water little by little.
- Knead simultaneously into a tight dough.
- Divide the dough into equal portions.
- Flatten and make a small hole in the centre.
- Deep fry until it turns brown.
- Vada Malai is ready.
