The seven wonders of the solar system are:

1. The Rings of Saturn: Discovered by Galileo in 1610, the rings of Saturn have captured our imagination. Saturn's rings are made up of billions and billions of rocks, most of which are pebble-sized. The outer most ring of Saturn is 7000 times larger in diameter than the planet. Much of the information about Saturn's rings has been obtained by NASA's Cassini space probe.

2. The Earth-Sun-Moon system: It's a cosmic coincidence. The Earth is the only place in the solar system from where you can observe a total solar eclipse. This is because the Moon is 400 times closer to the Earth than the Sun. At the same time, its diameter is 400 times smaller than the diameter of the Sun. The two factors nullify each other and hence we see a total solar eclipse.

3. The Asteroid Belt: A cosmic chaos, the asteroid belt spans a length of 150 million km. It lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. There are billions and billions of asteroids in this belt. We know of at least 7000 asteroids.

4. The Great Red Spot: The perfect storm on Jupiter has been raging for the past 300 years. It is so big that 3 Earths can fit inside of it. The Great Red Spot has been shrinking at the rate of 900 km per year.

5. The Sun: The reason behind our existence. The Sun is around which everything revolves. It has reached the middle of its age. The Sun has about 5 billion years left before it becomes a white dwarf star.

6. Olympus Mons: The largest shield volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons is a beast. It is 21 km tall (about 2.5 times taller than the Mt. Everest). It is spread across an area of 300,000 sq km and which is equivalent to the size of Italy.

7. The Oceans of Earth: Included in the list of the seven wonders of the solar system are the oceans that cover 70% of the total area of Earth. Nowhere in the solar system such vast stretches of water have been discovered. They are a wonder not only because of the water content, but also the vast diversity of marine life that lives in them.
