Italy. This film is unidentified in the archive. However a member of the public has said:
It is certainly Italy: italian troops and Carabinieri, plus a number of Italian politicians and intellectuals are shown, most prominently philosopher Benedetto Croce and former Foreign Minister Carlo Sforza (the two at the beginning). They were part of the second government headed by Marshall Badoglio, after Italy's capitulation, and after that the first government headed by Ivanoe Bonomi. The government provisional seat was in Salerno (which was occupied by the allies in 1943, so the images most probably were taken there. They show the new ministers gathering at the "Palazzo di Città", the municipality that served as seat of the government.
Various shots two elderly men walking down street. Various shots one of the men (with monocle and beard) writing at a desk. M/S the two elderly men sitting in armchairs. M/S middle aged man writing at desk.
Various shots people arriving at building ("Palazzo de Citta" - city hall?), some of men wear trilby hats and trench coats - look like Mafiosi! Italian soldiers check peoples' passes. The man with a beard arrives, people crowd around him and shakes his hands, one person in crowd holds up sign: "Viva La Republica". The middle aged man arrives. Crowds cheer and mob car as first, bearded man leaves building and drives away. Various shots of other men posing for camera, look like dignitaries. Various street scenes.
Note: could the bearded man be Ivanoe Bonomi, ex-Premier of Italy who was chosen as head of provisional Italian government in 1944?
