Among Haiti's gangs, the 400 Mawozo are the ones most responsible for its kidnapping crisis. Growing from a small gang in Port-au-Prince, 400 Mawozo made a fortune from express kidnappings. Led by Joseph Wilson, alias "Lanmò San Jou," who is on the FBI's Most Wanted List, 400 Mawozo has carved a criminal fiefdom spreading from Port-au-Prince to the Dominican border.
The 400 Mawozo gained international infamy when they kidnapped 17 American missionaries in Haiti in 2021 and demanded $17 million in ransoms. The missionaries escaped and 400 Mawozo felt the pressure. Many of its members were killed and arrested by police raids and in battles with other gangs.
It then joined Haiti's GPEP gang coalition, battling against the gang leader, Barbecue, and his G9 group of gangs.
Then, in March 2024, 400 Mawozo appear to have kidnapped YouTuber Addison Pierre Maaloof, better known as "YourFellowArab" or just "Arab." Their leader, Lanmo Sanjou, is now just as dangerous as other Haiti gang leaders, including Johnson Andre, alias "Izo 5 Segond," Jimmy Cherizier, alias "Barbecue," Gabriel Jean-Pierre, alias "Ti Gabriel," Vitel’homme Innocent, and Renel Destina, alias "Ti Lapli."
