The Northern Hospital - Inpatient Unit (IPU) Tower Stage 2, designed by Lyons, is a remarkable project that addresses the needs of a rapidly growing community. As one of Melbourne's busiest hospitals, the Northern Hospital has expanded from its origins as an outer suburban community hospital. The redevelopment of the IPU Tower represents a significant step in the hospital's transformation into a major metropolitan healthcare hub, accommodating the population growth and changing demographics of the region.

The project includes a four-storey in-patient unit tower built upon an existing three-storey podium, with intricate connections to the larger hospital campus. The design seamlessly extends vertically, horizontally, and even below existing buildings, integrating them into a cohesive whole. In addition to the in-patient unit tower, the project incorporates a range of essential facilities, such as a new public entry, transit lounge, operating theaters, central sterile services department, kitchen, and back-of-house areas. An intensive care unit was designed and procured as part of the early works, featuring culturally appropriate spaces that offer respite for families and a secure outdoor terrace.
The design and construction of the project presented unique challenges, as it had to be executed within a fully operational hospital environment. Furthermore, the global pandemic added further complexities during the construction phase. The upper level of the tower, initially planned for future fit-out, was ingeniously repurposed as an innovative pandemic ward, designed and integrated during ongoing construction. The clustering of similar facilities enhances adaptability and allows for flexible utilization of spaces.
Situated in the growing commercial center of Epping, the design of the IPU Tower responds to its surroundings, offering views of both the CBD and the picturesque Yarra Ranges. To create a distinctive local identity, the building facade incorporates the greens of the Yarra Ranges and employs bold colors for clear wayfinding to the public entrance. The main public stairs, prominently highlighted on the facade, provide sweeping panoramic views, serving as a reference point for navigation and offering staff and visitors a memorable experience.
The design approach places a strong emphasis on wellness, incorporating evidence-based salutogenic principles. The goal is to simplify wayfinding, create comfortable public waiting spaces, and provide ample natural light and views for patients, staff, and visitors. The integration of a dedicated ICU Garden within the high-intensity ICU ward allows for privacy and respite for patients, while also providing access to medical services. A separate portion of the ICU Garden is accessible to families through the dedicated Family Waiting Space.
Throughout the project, informal breakout spaces are strategically positioned to offer welcoming and comfortable areas for visitors and families. Tall windows are placed at the ends of corridors to maximize natural light and views, enhancing the experience of staff, patients, and visitors. The design further innovates upon the earlier stage by featuring broad panoramic windows in all patient bedrooms, framing breathtaking views of the Yarra Ranges and the CBD. Colors are thoughtfully utilized to support wayfinding, provide visual stimulation, and differentiate staff, patient, and visitor areas.
