(8 Apr 2018) Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday for discussions on furthering economic cooperation.
A delegation of high level Singaporean government officials, also including Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, is on the first day of a five day visit to China.
Lee plans to make his debut this week at the Boao Forum for Asia, a Chinese-sponsored annual gathering for political and economic elites on tropical Hainan island.
Balakrishnan and Wang exchanged remarks about rising trade tensions in a conference room at the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The visit comes as China and the US exchange tariff threats in what is already shaping up to be the biggest trade battle for more than half a century.
Beijing has vowed to "counterattack with great strength" if US President Donald Trump follows through on threats to impose tariffs on an additional 100 billion US dollars in Chinese goods.
