John Leland discusses his book, "Happiness Is A Choice You Make", at Politics and Prose on 1/29/18.
Leland’s third book expands on “85 & Up,” his popular New York Times series about America’s fastest growing age group: those over eighty-five. Leland himself was fifty-five and serving as caregiver for his aging mother when he started talking with six of New York City’s oldest old. His own experience had led him to believe that aging is a steady process of mental and physical deterioration, one that inexorably lowers the quality of life. The elders he got to know over the course of a year showed him otherwise. Resilient, joyful, and intent on not wasting their time on negative emotions, they taught him that happiness is always an option.
