Pornhub disabled its website in Texas Thursday after a judge upheld a law that requires porn sites to verify users' age before allowing them access to their platforms. The age-verification rule—which requires sites like Porhub to verify users age using a government-issued ID or “public or private transactional data—was signed into law by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June 2023. It was originally set to go into effect in September but the Free Speech Coalition, a trade association for the adult entertainment industry which includes Pornhub’s parent-company, Aylo Global Entertainment, filed a lawsuit against its enforcement. In August 2023, a U. S. District Court judge blocked enforcement of the law saying it violated the First Amendment. The state appealed that ruling and the Court of Appeals put the District Court’s ruling on hold while it considered Texas’ appeal. Texas was subsequently allowed to start enforcing the law in November. In February, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Aylo Global Entertainment for not following the law. Paxton is asking Aylo to pay $1.6 million in fines for violating the law, if a judge sides with him. If companies don’t comply with the law, they can be fined up to $10,000 a day.
