The Meteora (2024) is a region in Thessaly, Greece and is etymologically related to 'meteor' (elevated). The Meteora (or Μετέωρα in Greek) is a rock formation in central Greece with Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The monasteries were built in the medieval and during the Ottoman occupation when many Christians were prosecuted by their Islamic rulers. In order to escape Islamic oppression many Christians fled to the high rocks of Meteora. Most of the existing monasteries were built between the 13th and the 14th century. Meteora is located near the town of Kalambaka. The site is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List and one of the James Bond movies was filmed here.
