Santarem on the Tagus road
The Tagus is the largest river in Portugal and the oldest route to the ocean. When there were no land roads, maps, atlases and GPS yet, people moved along rivers - by water or by land - this was the most reliable landmark and accurate guide. And along the river routes, people built hotels, restaurants and gas stations for horses and ships, which were then called a fortress or castle. Therefore, along the entire Tagus River, at a distance of a day's march from each other, there were fortresses where travelers could hide for the night. One of these fortresses was the city of Santarem in the middle reaches of the Tagus.
