Functional training is one of those buzz words thrown around the fitness industry recently and made very popular with trends like Crossfit and various other hardcore training methods.
There is a big difference between sports specific integrated movement and functional training and in this video I explain what that is and how you can develop FUNDAMENTAL skills to prepare your body for optimal and efficient movement.
One of the many perspectives that I like you to really understand is this concept that we aren’t training muscles we are training the neuro-musculoskeletal system. Our goal is to get your body’s
systems to work in a highly coordinated and effective fashion so that functional tasks are completed successfully. There is an extremely important distinction to be made here.
The isolated approach is really best for simply training muscles so that they get bigger and stronger. The integrated approach is best for improving the efficiency of the neuro musculoskeletal system. Compare the movement below of walking up stairs to the step up exercise.
The focus is really on the end result that we are after – improved human movement and function. This takes advantage of how the neuromuscular system is designed to work in the first place which is in a highly coordinated manner. Very, very rarely to muscles work in complete isolation or anywhere close to it. Some muscles contract to provide movement while some muscles con-tract to provide stability. This is all done at the same time. The don’t work separate to each other. In addition to this it must not be forgotten that the more coordinated and complex movements have a greater effect on the brain.
