Species spotlight - sea hare (aplysia punctata)

The Sea hare (Aplysia punctata) is a type of marine snail that is often found in shallow waters and low shore rock pools. They are named after their large upper head tentacles, that resemble the ears of a Hare, and it is a species that can grow between 7-20cm in length. Unlike other marine snail species found in the UK, the Sea hare has an internal shell, which is around 4cm long and transparent. This species typically feeds on seaweed, and it is thought that the type of the seaweed a Sea hare eats will determine its coloration, meaning that green Sea hares feed on green seaweed like Sea lettuce whilst the red Sea hares feed on red seaweed like Dulse. The Sea hare can be found on most stretches of coastline around the UK, only being absent on the east coasts of England and Ireland. This species is a hermaphrodite and they sometimes mate in chains, with an individual acting as both male and female. They lay eggs in long pink threads, which are deposited on seaweed and look a bit like pink spaghetti. So, that’s all you need to know about the Sea hare.
