Did you know you can grow mushrooms on books? The mycelium feeds on the paper and turns it into a lovely crop of mushrooms.
A little while back Merlin Sheldrake was at our farm and wanted to see if we could grow mushrooms on his new book Entangled Life for a time lapse video. Of course we said yes!
He said it would allow him to eat his words, but that won't be necessary as his book quickly made it into the Sunday Times Bestseller List!
(that's the oldest and most influential book sales chart in the UK, and the one that every author wants to be on....)
If you'd like to pick up a copy of Entangled life, check it out here: [ Ссылка ]
In this video we show you how to inoculated a book with mushroom spawn and grow a crop of mushrooms from it.
We also show you the time-lapse video that Merlin made of mushrooms eating and growing from his book.
And if you ever wondered what sound growing mycelium makes - here's your chance!
Time Lapse Credits:
Video by DRK Videography. Music by Cosmo Sheldrake. Book inoculated by GroCycle . Recordings of fungus digesting the book by Michael Prime.
All sounds apart from voice and bass are recordings of the fungus devouring the book. Recordings were made by sound ecologist Michael Prime with electrodes that detect the bio-electric activity of the fungus and control a tunable oscillator. Fluctuations in pitch and rhythm are real-time sonic representations of the activity of the fungus digesting the book.
