This video explains dehydration of alcohol by two different methods. The product for the elimination of one water molecule from alcohol is an Alkene. Dehydration can be performed under acidic conditions by using concentrated sulfuric acid. It can also be performed under basic conditions using phosphorous oxy chloride (PCl3) in pyridine. The mechanism for dehydration of alcohols under acidic condition is E1 and its involving formation of carbocations. so rearrangement of carbocations is common. The mechanism under basic conditions is E2.
