(17 Jan 2018) Libyan coast guard officials said they rescued 245 migrants of different African nationalities on Wednesday, from two boats off the coast of Libya.
Captain Milad Abdulkarim explained the rescue operation took place in two stages and was carried out by the coast guard vessel Sabratha, north of the cities of Zawiya and Zuwara, shortly after they received a distress call.
He said the coast guard managed to save everyone and return them to Tripoli naval base, where they received humanitarian and medical assistance from International Organisation for Migration (IOM) staff.
With Wednesday's operation, the Libyan Coast Guard has managed to save more than 1,000 migrants in less than a week.
