GALLATIN COUNTY, Ky. (Brad Underwood) -- Police are still searching for the suspects who robbed the Cheviot News at gunpoint in December 2014.
They got away with $500 from the register plus a donation jar meant for a Gallatin County family. Local 12 first reported on the story in early December. Since then, donations have come in from all over the tri-state.
Since the donation jar meant for Melodie Lawrence and her grandchildren was stolen, the community has helped out in a big way. And while the family now knows of the effort, they have no idea of the level of generosity. They got a big surprise!
With their hands full, George Burbacher and Larry Howard from Cheviot News delivered the goods to Melodie Lawrence and her seven grandchildren. Lawrence is their legal guardian and has raised many of them since they were babies.
"We've got Cameron, Andrew, my brother Noah, cousin Serenity, Grandma, cousin Caitlin, sister Sadie, and cousin princess Callie," said Melodie.
This Christmas, George and Larry have one more present to put under the tree. When a masked man stole the donation jar, it had fifty dollars in it. When news spread about the jar and who it was for, the donations kept rolling in for the family. Lawrence works two jobs to support her family and the money will help out however it can.
Larry told Local 12, "It was a dollar, five dollars, ten dollars
