I diagnose hundreds of attic noises for customers each year. I should have a doctorate degree in attic "noiseology". Some customers hear a big noise and think that they have some crazy big animal up there. Lots of times this is just not the case. Small animals can make a huge noise. Lots depends on just what the animal is doing. I tell people, think about a mouse in a guitar. That would be a much noisier mouse than one running across the carpet.
One further note. I misspoke when I said that dogs and raccoons don't have incisors. They do have incisors, they are just not perpetually growing "chisel type" teeth like rodents have.
