This is what you can expect as an American (or any other citizen), flying from the US to Germany.
Ladies and gents if this is your first international flight, then let me help you relieve some stress with some flying tips for traveling abroad. We recently flew (main cabin) from Atlanta to Munich through Air France but operated by Delta Airlines. This was an 8hr and 56min flight.
Arrive to the airport at a minimum 3hrs before your flight takes off. You never know how long lines will be when you get there.
Double check you have everyone’s passport and print out or screen shot your boarding passes when you check in to the flight

Only bring essential carry on items such as your favorite pillow, wireless headphones, laptop, entertainment for kids, and medication. Keep in mind that the airline (at a minimum) will provide a pillow/blanket, ear plugs, headphones, and an eye mask.
Speaking of masks, as of this recording, Delta and other airlines still require you to wear a mask for the entire duration of the flight.
Pro Tip: Other things to consider bringing on the plane.
- Medicines
- Multiple phone chargers
- Favorite pillow/blanket/snacks
- Games/electronics
- Noise cancelling headphones (no bluetooth on plane)
- Hygiene toiletries
- Travel size items
- Essential baby supplies (such as toddler car seat)
My wife hates smelling other humans so to avoid this, she brings tiger balm or an inhaler stick. Very convenient when you don’t want to smell people or whatever they just did in the potty.
Bathrooms in the main cabin are a little bigger than standard airplane size, but I’d recommend selecting a seat a couple rows away from the latrine.
Ok Let’s get ready for take off. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing. You’re on a plane for at least 9hrs, so I would dress in something you can comfortably sleep in, but also acceptable in public.
Seat amenities. Under the seat you’ve got a 220 and 120 volt outlet, as well as a USB port on your TV screen in front of you.
Entertainment. Every seat in the plane comes with your own touchscreen monitor. You can choose from hundreds of free movies, tv shows, podcasts, and music to help you get through the flight. But if that’s not doing it for ya, try watching a movie with some complimentary beer, wine, and spirits. I’m not a big drinker, so my wife glady takes my second glass of wine to help her sleep.
Food on the plane is hit or miss, but we never pass up a free hot meal.
On this particular flight we flew in the evening so we had the dinner option of chicken marsala with garlic mash potatoes and veggies, or the four cheese ravioli with basil pesto and pomodoro sauce.
On the side, we had this Israeli couscous veggie salad, and for dessert, a not-so-tasty lemon cake. Your kids will probably love it though.
My wife insisted that we fill our wine glasses up and I got to say, the food wasn’t that bad. In the middle of the flight they’ll come around with light snacks and water. And in the morning before landing we had an egg McMuffin sandwich thing and fruit which was meh.
One last thing, if you’re feeling restless and need to stretch your legs, try taking a walk to the back of the plane while everyone’s sleeping, I’m a tall lanky guy, so this was the best spot for me to extend my spider man body.
