While many team building activities attempt to simulate the real world, George Hickey and John Bensley decided to incorporate it. They re-examined their city and decided to turn it into an app-based, team-building game using Brisbane's abundant, but often overlooked and under-appreciated public artworks.
Their game challenges teams to seek out artworks in a scavenger-hunt style race, where points available change dynamically based on a range of factors, including distance, time, and the actions of competing teams, thus rewarding strategy and insights as well as speed. This creates the opportunity for diverging strategies, individual creativity, and engagement with the artwork.
The phone-based app guides teams with a map, allows them to submit answers and location-based photo evidence from each site as they go, and fosters competition by displaying a real-time leaderboard. George Hickey is a learning designer at QUT. He has a background in IT and programming, and is always searching for creative ways to apply these to teaching and learning. He has a fascination with, and appreciation for, the work of artists, inspired in no small part by his wife, a visual artist.
John Bensley is an Associate Professor of Practice at QUT with a passion for understanding the determining effect of the human equation within organisations and helping people sense-make in complex environments. As the Academic Director Canberra and Learning Innovation in the Graduate School of Business he works alongside other professionals, to design, develop and deliver innovative trans-disciplinary education programs.
