The recent winner of the U.S. Powerball lottery, who won $1.3B dollar has been revealed and is currently a hot topic.
According to the Statesman Journal on the 29th, Ching Charlie Saephan, 46, celebrated his win by reading a statement at the Powerball headquarters in Salem, Oregon.
Saephan is an immigrant from Laos residing in Portland. He moved to Thailand in 1987 and then to the United States in 1994. He worked as a CNC machinist making airplane parts and has been battling cancer for the past eight years.
Saephan's winning amount is approximately $1.3B, making it the fourth largest Powerball jackpot ever and the eighth largest lottery prize overall. The jackpot grew astronomically over the last three months as there were no winners.
Upon hearing that the jackpot had increased, Saephan slept with the lottery numbers under his pillow. He said, "My children are young and I was not very healthy," and shared that he prayed to God for help.
Saephan announced that he would share the winnings with his wife, Duaphen Saephan (37), and a friend, Raiza Chao (55). He explained that since Chao had given him $100 for the lottery ticket, they would split the prize equally.
Upon learning of the win, Saephan called Chao to share the news. He asked, "Raiza, where are you?" As Chao was driving to work, she replied, "I'm going to work," to which Saephan said, "You don't need to go anymore. We won the lottery. We hit the jackpot!"
At the press conference that day, he expressed his gratitude for the "great blessing" of winning the lottery, saying, "Now I can bless my family and hire a good doctor for myself."
They chose to receive the payment as a lump sum rather than in 30 instalments. Saephan will receive the amount after 8% state tax and 24% federal tax deductions.
Saephan plans to buy a house in Oregon with the money. He added, "I love Oregon. I've lived here for 30 years and will continue to live here."
