At least two men were killed and three others were injured in a shooting in a Washington D.C. neighborhood, according to the Washington D.C. police department.
Washington D.C. Acting Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said in a press conference that on Wednesday night at around 9.50 p.m. officers had responded to the sounds of gunshots near the intersection of 14th Street and Saratoga Avenue, Northeast in the Brentwood area.
She said when the officers arrived on the scene, they immediately found three people with gunshot wounds. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and another was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Smith said two more men “suffering from gunshot wounds” — which a preliminary investigation had determined was likely from the same shooting incident — brought themselves to a nearby hospital. One of them was listed in critical condition, while the other had non-life threatening injuries.
"Right now we have a lookout for three people in a gray SUV that was seen fleeing the scene," Smith then said, before urging members of the public with any information on the incident to come forward to police.
“We know someone out in the community has information about what happened tonight,” she added.
Smith did not provide any other details on the incident or suspects involved.
However, she later responded to a reporter asking whether an exchange of gunfire occurred between the people injured, Smith noted that investigators were still in the “very preliminary stages of the investigation.”
The acting police chief also addressed a query from a reporter about increases in crime in the area.
“[You’re] having these crew on crew senseless arguments with firearms being introduced when folks have disputes as opposed to being able to resolve them the way we would typically resolve a dispute,” she said. "What I will say is that our officers were present in this area, as they always are on an ongoing basis."
