Hi my name is Dave and I've made this video because i couldn't find one to help me
I'm going to change a distributor and coil on my 1977 (1500) MG midget from the old points system to electronic.(powermax 45d dizzy and coil)
it's and uprated dizzy and performance coil.( better spark etc etc)
I purchased it from www.simonbbc.com in Bromsgrove U.K
it cost me £75 (Nov 2012)
Please note the first time I did this it didn't work and had to take it back to have it checked but was assured all was well.
So I thought it best to video it, put it out there and show how it's done (if it works)
I first set the timing (10degs btdc at 700rpm or as close as I can get to workshop manual spec) and check all was (is) running fine.( i know, if it ain't broke etc etc )
Then and I can't stress enough, mark the position of the dizzy on the retaining bracket, so if you have to put it back in you have a reference point.(I know cause I've made the mistake once!!!)
After the timing is set, I have install a 12v line from the fuse box (live when the ignition is switched on) to near where the coil will be. you can take a feed from the ignition switch in the car but I thought it safer to take it from fuse box.
it is most IMPORTANT to follow the instructions supplied with the new diizy and coil on the way it is wired, if you screw it up the warrenty is invalid.
Don't add the rev counter wire to the neg side of the coil yet, not until all is up and running and timing sorted, and DON'T use the 12v line from the ignition or starter solenoid
as these are part of a ballasted system (reduced voltage to + side of coil and new system will not work with this)
Next, take out all the spark plugs so you can turn the crank shaft so the timing marks are at top dead centre (tdc) on the number 1 spark plug
loosen the retaining bolt holding the dizzy in, then take the dizzy out.
put the new dizzy in to replace the old one and try to adjust the number 1 sparking point to where the old dizzy number 1 sparking point was, by turning the dizzy. slightly tighten bolt but leave enough slack do you can turn the dizzy with your hand when you start the car
