The search in California for a 5 year old boy has been called off for the day after his mother's car was swept away in flood waters as severe weather continues to strike.

The mother attempted to cross a flooded roadway when the waters overtook her car forcing both to jump out of the vehicle.

The mother was rescued, but efforts to locate and rescue her son have been unsuccessful. A roughly seven-hour search for the missing boy turned up only his shoe before officials called it off as flood water levels were too dangerous for divers, officials said. The boy has not been declared dead, said spokesperson Tony Cipolla of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. --
