MySQL Error Code Access Denied for Root User localhost in Ubuntu Linux. Authentication will be by the system user credentials by Unix Auth Socket.
Steps to trouble shoot this issue.
It can be done in two ways.
OPTION 1 - to change the plugin of root user.
sudo mysql -u root -p
use mysql
select user, host, plugin from mysql.user;
update user set plugin="mysql_native_password" where User="root";
flush privileges;
exit;
OPTION 2 - Replace USER with the username you have.
1. sudo mysql -u root -p
2. use mysql;
3. select user, host, plugin from mysql.user;
4. create user 'username'@'localhost' identified by 'password';
5. grant all privileges on *.* to 'username'@'localhost';
6. update user set plugin = "auth_socket" where user='username';
7. flush privileges;
8. exit;
9. sudo service mysql restart
