(5 Mar 2022) Hundreds of Roma families were being welcomed at a sports venue in the the Moldovan capital Chisinau on Saturday as the country continues to cope with an influx of refugees from the conflict in Ukraine.
Two of the refugees appealed for leaders to bring peace to their country.
"We want peace, we ask (for) peace, we have children, so we desire peace, said Maria Cherepovskaia, 50.
Cherepovskaia, who fled from Donetsk, said the bombing there had increased dramatically.
She started her journey to safety by walking for 15 kilometers. She managed to reach Chisinau with the help of several people who assisted her with transportation and food.
By her side, Elizabeta Kuznitzova, a mother of five from Zaporizhzhia, made the same appeal. "Yes, we don't want war. We want to see our children grow, live in peace," she said.
Their hopes came on the day of a tentative breakthrough cease-fire to evacuate residents in Ukraine.
It quickly fell apart as Ukrainian officials said shelling had halted the work to remove civilians hours after Russia announced the deal.
