The term "States' Rights" has a long and sordid history in the United States. On its surface, it can seem harmless -- just an affirmation of the intent of the original founding fathers -- a desire to live freely and independent of federal oppression.
But a closer examination of this phrase reveals its ugly history of racism and segregationist policies. It was a staple of the so-called, "Southern Strategy" employed by many politicians to say the "quiet part" out loud without being called to the carpet about their true intent.
