Why did Riley fall into depression in Inside Out? It's something that's been on my mind lately. When you really think about it, it seems a bit strange considering how the Emotions are set up. The film establishes that an emotion must be present for it to be felt and influence Riley's actions, right? We see this with Joy making Riley happy and Sadness making her cry. So, if the Emotions disappear, Riley should stop feeling them. When Joy is lost, Riley can't feel happiness, which makes sense. But without Sadness, shouldn't Riley have experienced an extreme of another emotion? Fear is next in line, so perhaps Riley should have been in a state of panic, experiencing anxiety attacks and developing phobias. Anger is also a strong contender, potentially turning Riley into a misanthrope, hating the world and everyone in it. Alternatively, Disgust could have taken over, making Riley and obsessed with herself. So, why did Riley go into depression instead?
