Incretins are hormones that are secreted by cells in the intestines in response to food intake, and they play an important role in glucose homeostasis. They work by stimulating the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner, which means that they only stimulate insulin release when blood glucose levels are high. Incretins also slow down the rate at which glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream, and they suppress the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood glucose levels. By regulating insulin and glucagon secretion, incretins help to maintain normal blood glucose levels and prevent hyperglycemia.
