I used to think that colonizing Mars was a great idea and we should do it as soon as possible however as I look into it I'm starting to realize that it's actually a very inconvenient idea and we would have no major advantages over just living in space if we were to colonize Mars the only advantage is if we could terraform Mars and develop an atmosphere similar to earth then it would be a lot more feasible to live there however without an atmosphere we are literally putting ourselves into more danger by living on the surface of the planet then we would be by living in orbit because of the intense dust storms that create lightning marsquakes and the fact that we would need still need to get off the planet.
So let's focus our efforts on building an O'Neill cylinder instead this is a large space station that will allow us to breathe comfortably grow plants create cities and sustain 10s of thousands of people in a perfect environment with no ill effects of weather or natural disaster. This would not only be better for humanity but there would be far fewer challenges than terraforming and colonizing Mars Mars would be a great resource to utilize in the future for its minerals and chemical compounds but aside from that it's basically useless to us considering we have a perfectly good planet to live on and the technology to make space living much more enjoyable
