Farming Activism in Abbotsford
As a part of our “South Asian in the Valley” series, this video looks at a history of farming activism in Abbotsford by exploring both the 1980s Canadian Farmworkers Union protests and the current protests occurring in support of Indian farmers.
The Reach Gallery Museum continues to stand in solidarity with the farmers protesting the recent laws passed by the Indian government. We hope that this video demonstrates why so many members of our own community are deeply affected by these protests.
As we highlight the Punjabi community’s relationship to land and agriculture it is also important to acknowledge our roles as settlers on the unceded Stó:lō territory of the Semá:th and Máthekwi First Nations.
This video is dedicated to Charanpal Singh Gill. He was a founding member of the Canadian Farmworkers Union. Charanpal Singh Gill sadly passed away in February of 2021.
