A rainy and cold backpacking trip in the Morgan Monroe State Forest in Indiana on the Low Gap Trail. The Low Gap Trail is also a 10-mile hiking and backpacking loop which begins and ends at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest Headquarters (directions below). As with the Three Lakes Trail, this also has some long, high hills in between some relatively flat stretches. Portions of this trail can also be used to hike shorter 3-mile loops, such as the Rock Shelter Loop and the Mason Ridge Loop. Backcountry camping or dispersed camping is allowed along a certain area of the eastern-most portion of the loop. This was another of my training hikes for the Philmont Scout Ranch trip later this summer. I was doing a gear shakedown with some gear and getting a few miles in (around 6) with the loadout and backpack setup. This is one of the best backpacking areas in all of Indiana.
