Ep. 29 THE MOSAIC ANIMALS, Wood slice ornaments, Nephew’s update, Filati pulling, New commission.
I start by grouting the mosaic animals with black sanded grout. Then I finish them off with black acrylic paint on the edges and self-stick felt on the bottom so they don't scratch the surface they sit on. Finally, I have fun arranging them in a little forest table scape with holly and ornaments!
I find some gorgeous streaky brown stained glass and start with a few pinecones on the wood slice ornaments. Then I make a little pine tree with snow and start a poinsettia.
Next, I start a mosaic commission with a visit to the hardware store to pick up birch plywood. They cut it down for me and then I bring it home to sand and prime. The client requested a religious design with two hearts - The Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. These two designs have specific characteristics that identify them - such as a lily for purity, a crown of roses, a sword piercing the heart, and a crown of thorns. So I sketch it out on tracing paper and make a few changes along the way.
Then I very impressively show you the end result of hours and hours and hours (many hours!) of work on a big bunch of wood slice ornaments in just a few seconds.
Somehow I even find time to pull filati outside with my torch and crucible. Then I make a pendant with it and wire the magnolia mosaic so I can hang it on the wall! Busy week.
BONUS: Don't forget to bring Weldbond out of freezing temps!
EXTRA BONUS: My nephews make a bit of progress on their mosaics and one of them puts in his last piece!!!! Yay!
