There are a couple of lines of defense that your body develops in order to protect the baby and your body during pregnancy. First of all, you have the mucus plug which is just that, a mucus plug that forms in the cervix to help act as a barrier. And then there is the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby and also helps to protect the baby and the contents of the uterus from infection. This means that once the mucus plug comes out it might mean that labor is coming soon but not in all cases. Oftentimes when the mucus plug comes out it's thick, it's very mucusy, and sometimes a little bloody. If you feel like your mucus plug has come out and you're 29 weeks along I would recommend bringing it up with your doctor because it can be a sign of preterm labor. If you're less than 37 weeks and you feel like you lost your mucus plug, if you're having pains, if you feel like you're having a leaking of fluid or bleeding from the vagina you definitely need to be checked out right away. However, if you're full term meaning after 37 weeks and you feel like your mucus plug came out, just duly note it and move along with your day. If you're preterm it's definitely something to check out just to make sure there aren't any issues. If your mucus plug has fallen out and your doctor has checked you out and said that everything is okay your body will usually actually form another mucus plug and hopefully that will last you until you get further along in the pregnancy.
