An interventional cardiologist specializes in addressing heart and vascular issues requiring catheterization. As explained by Cindy Baker, MD, FACC, of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a patient may suffer an acute myocardial infarction, heart attack or may be referred following an abnormal stress test, chest pain or other symptoms related to coronary disease.
Treatment during catheterization may include either use of balloons or placement of a stent to open narrowing or blockage. The interventional cardiologist provides care from the initial office visit, through the catheterization procedure and subsequent followup care, often times over the course of many years.
