'Afghan Girl' from National Geographic magazine cover granted refugee status in Italy.
Sharbat Gula, a 12-year-old Pashtun orphan living in a refugee camp on the Afghan-Pakistan border, was photographed in 1984 and published the following year.
Gula was tracked down decades later in Pakistan, after her name was forgotten for years.
"When I showed it to the editor of National Geographic, he leapt to his feet and said, 'That's our next cover,'" McCurry explained.
He added that he was aware the photograph was unique when he produced it.
