Our car is passed by more cars that we are passing. This is a gas saving strategy, as there is a fuel savings of 2% per mph slower, due to reduced aerodynamic drag.
Also, we run 40 psi in all tires without extra tire wear. Higher bicycle tire pressure=easier peddling, remember?
Now back to following distance....some people, follow close to escape responsibility, or who have an incredibly weak sense of self value, will actually follow very closely, sometimes within one vehicle length. Likely, this gives the close follower some sense of protection, control, or display of power and aggression. There are several gentle cures for this: Wash your windshield, or gently slow down a few mph, then zip back to your normal following distance, and repeat.
Important Notes: Driving in heavy traffic reduces gas mileage significantly. Avoid if possible. Take a train or a bus instead. Maybe just stay away from highly populated places...Everything is more expensive there anyway, and more aggression, more disease, more trash, more stink, more hassles). Our rule is that if you need more than one "deadbolt" on your door, you shouldn't be living there.
