Musicians, friends, and well-wishers gathered in Penzance June 1994 to honour the memory of Brenda Wootton, who died three months earlier. The hall was filled to capacity and the warmth and love were overflowing.

The guest list reads like a Who's Who from the folk music scene of the 1960's in West Cornwall. Those appearing included: Alex Atterson, Jim Bassett, Pete Berryman, Bert Biscoe, Michael Chapman, Decameron, Ralph McTell, The Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra (reformed), Mike Silver, Allan Taylor, Jake Walton, Old Will (John Alderslade and Will Whitmarsh), and Brenda's old friends, Donald Jarvis and Vera Round.

Brenda Wootton was a magical singer and a supreme performer, who was equally at home with gospels, blues, jazz, folk, rock or Chapel hymns. In Cornwall she was known principally for her weekly Radio Cornwall programme, Sunday Best, which achieved record listening figures. Her Bardic name was Gwylan Gwavas (Seagull of Newlyn), and on stages and in concert halls around the world she fiercely proclaimed her Cornishness. Everywhere she sang Brenda was known as the Voice of Cornwall

Brenda had an energy and an unquenchable spirit which gave her the courage she needed to stand in front of an audience and bare her soul, to woo them, to make them laugh and to make them cry. She did it to prove that she could, to show them that a fat, middle-aged Cornish granny could knock their socks off with that incredible voice. But most of all she did it because she dearly loved to sing
