To Métis youth:
For months, myself and many other elected officials within the Métis Nation of Ontario have been hearing from concerned citizens.
We are hearing daily from Métis youth and their families, worried about misinformation and political rhetoric about Ontario Métis communities.
I’ve heard from too many about the bullying and harassment you are experiencing online and in your schools. Some of you may feel like you have to hide who you are just to feel safe. As a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, this hurts, deeply, and it is not ok.
No young person should be made to feel like they can only be safe by living in the shadows.I want you to know that our Métis government is thinking about you every day and doing everything we can to make things better.
Do not lose hope and do not, ever, lose your pride. Be proud of who you are. Be proud to be Métis. And whatever helps for you to feel safe, we support you. We are a resilient people, and we never give up.
Our ancestors left us a legacy of traditions and culture, and dreamed of a world in which you could proudly embrace your identity.
I know that right now, some may tell you that Métis people and Métis communities in Ontario do not exist. They may even say that your parents and family are misguided about being Métis or about your history and rights.
But these people don’t know the long, rich, and beautiful history of Métis people and communities in Ontario. They do not know your history, and they do not know your story. Our existence is not an opinion, it’s a proven fact, and our truth.
And the truth matters. You deserve to be proud of your identity, of your family, and of your community. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.
And please, continue to reach out when you need a shoulder to lean on. Know that our Métis government is so proud of you.
And we will always have your back.
