Hosted by Dr Penny Moyle, CEO of Race Against Dementia. This webinar for the Dementia Research Careers Festival and National Careers week focussed on opportunities for young-people and undergraduates to bring their talents to Dementia Research, in the areas of technology, maths, coding and more. Our presenters are:
Dr Sarah Marzi, Mathematician and Psychologist from the UK Dementia Research Institute
Matthew Harrison, Tech Designer and Dementia Researcher at the UK Dementia Research Institute, Helix Centre
Dr Riona McArdle, from Newcastle University, researching use of wearable tech & gait analysis for dementia diagnosis and care.
Dementia is not a natural part of ageing – We all forget a name or a face sometimes. Especially as we get older. But dementia is something different, memory problems are one of a number of symptoms that people with dementia may experience. Others include difficulties with planning, thinking things through, struggling to keep up with a conversation, and sometimes changes in mood or behaviour. Dementia is devastating, around 850,000 people are living with the disease in the UK and it is now the leading cause of death for both men and women in the UK. Yet just half (51%) of the public recognise that dementia can cause death. Despite this, we still do not fully understand what causes the disease, there is no cure, and it has been 16 years since any new drugs were licensed to treat the disease. The only way to tackle this condition is through research! Physicists, coders, tech graduates, engineers and people from all fields of education are exploring how to improve the lives of people living with dementia, and making breakthroughs.
We need more young-people and undergraduates to follow a path into a career in dementia research.
The Dementia Research Careers Festival is aligned to National Careers Week – Empowering positive change through careers education. Join us from the 1st to the 6th of March 2021, to discover why research is important and how skills from all areas can be applied to dementia research. Hear from researchers working in the field, and to get advice and support to take the next step to becoming a Dementia Researcher.
