Hi All
Ref: IN GAME HDR settings for 2020 SONY Full Array x900h TV after 1 hour of playing on PS5
RDR2 is a bit of a HDR nightmare and has been since launch. SDR mode has better colour and contrast but lacks detail such as HDR in blacks on coats and shadows. However the HDR can appear washed out and the settings seem confusing as the Picture and logo demo screen seems just all wrong.
In this video I will cycle through SDR, HDR cinematic default and HDR game with various settings.
Personally I am finding that 450-500 Paper white settings and a Peek Brightness or Nits value of around 6000 to 8000 is best. I think as you go through the game and have the various scenes such as Snow, night and eventually the Main camp in glorious sunlight this is still the right setting.
I have the UK xh90 (us x900h) Full array Sony 55 inch model 2020. I have it in Auto Game mode, Gamma 0, Black level 49, No added extras such as motion blur or noise reductions. Live colour is off and Colour set to 58. My X-Dynamic range is full and the Full array back lighting Black assist is on full. No Black contrast assist. My Brightness was at 35/40 not MAX. (I don't change it much since the annoying Sony pop-up since the firmware update about saving energy!!, thanks Sony!)
Yes some scenes make you wonder if the sun is too bright but having played around 1 hour now this seems about the best. Every TV is different so please play with your settings.
Basically I have noticed that the Paper level if not at around 400-500 and if set as the demo suggests at around 80-100 this makes the picture too dim and washed out. Also if you have less than 6000 you can get away with it down to 4000/5000 but you may find some scenes dimmer. You will see that in the first few adjustments in the video clips that lower Peek Brightness makes the Sun seem dimmer and you can see the mountains next to the sun in the distance. I prefer the brighter picture and a glaring sun beams and this is your choice.
Some people will just leave it off and play with SDR, others like me will fiddle for hours! Its a Great game that now look s even better on PS5.
WHEN YOU VIEW THIS ON A PC MONITOR OR MOBILE DEVICE IT MAYBE HARD TO SEE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE PICTURES. THIS IS BEST VIEWED ON THE SONY TV. OTHERWISE JUST TAKE NOTE OF THE SETTINGS AND TRY IT YOURSELF. I HAVE NOTICED THAT ON MY PC MONITOR MY HIGH 8000+ SETTINGS LOOKS TOO BRIGHT. THIS MAY JUST BE THE CAPTURE OF THE PS5 AND THIS MP4 VIDEO. Also this is a 1080p video capture. Thanks.
Why they make this so damn hard to sort I don't know.
This was run on a PS5 disk version, HDMI 2.1 Hdmi Official Lead.
I hope this helps others with HDR issues! Cheers All
