In this video, I’ll answer the question – what is equity vs equality? People often use “equity” and “equality” interchangeably, perhaps because of how similar their definitions are to each other. In terms of social systems, however, the two couldn’t be any more different.
“Equality” means that every single individual or group has access to the same resources or opportunities. Each one is treated the same, regardless of their attributes and circumstances.
For example, we can say that government subsidies on things like gasoline and food are based on equality because they’re available to every person in the country, whether they be rich or poor, old, or young.
On the other hand “equity” refers to fairness. It recognizes that individuals or groups in a society each have different circumstances and attributes. Thus, it allocates resources and opportunities to them in a way that enables them to reach an equal outcome.
Are equity and equality the same?
