The first court appearance in Criminal Court is typically the arraignment. The arraignment follows an arrest for a crime or the receipt of a Criminal Complaint in the mail. Arraignments are important and must be taken seriously! Before you ever head to court it is strongly advised you speak to an attorney. Most attorneys will offer free consultations so search for an attorney in the area where your court is located and find one who has experience in the area of law related to the crime charged.
When you appear in Court the Judge will advise you of the charge, the potential consequences of the charge, your Constitutional Rights and ask you to enter a Plea (always, always Not Guilty). The Judge will then order "conditions of release," which are rules that must be followed when you leave the court. The Judge can also have you taken into custody, hence the importance of being well prepared.
