STORYLINE:
Thousands of people in Belgium and Germany joined a global protest opposing violence against women on Thursday.
The events were part of the global "One Billion Rising" campaign launched by American author Eve Ensler, calling for people across the globe to "rise up" against all forms of violence against women.
According to the campaign website, one (b) billion women all over the world will suffer some form of violence in their lifetime, whether physical or psychological.
In the Belgian capital Brussels, people gathered in Place de la Monnaie to perform a dance in protest against violence against women.
"Every woman counts, it does not matter if you are in Europe or outside of Europe, we believe violence against women is an issue which we have to take seriously," said Zita Gurmai, Hungarian Member of the European Parliament.
Earlier, a dance was also performed by employees inside the European Commission building.
In the German capital Berlin, people danced in front of the Brandenburg Gate late on Thursday afternoon.
"One billion women suffer violence and we want this to end," said Claudia Zinke, organiser of the "One Billion Rising" dance protest in Germany.
According to organisers, similar events took place in 205 countries on Thursday.
The event was organised to coincide with Valentine's Day.
Ensler, author of "The Vagina Monologues," announced the campaign last year, urging women and men around the world to walk out of work or school on February 14, 2013, and dance to raise awareness of the troubling United Nations statistic that one in three women worldwide will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.
