"How can you be an artist and not reflect the times?" - Nina Simone
Monumental is a short documentary film that combines historical and contemporary Bahamian perspectives on the statue of Christopher Columbus at Government House. The film examines the role of colonial monuments in the modern Bahamian landscape and draws attention to their part in upholding harmful systems of neocolonialism, racism, and white supremacy. Ultimately, Monumental asks us to consider how the past moulds power structures in the present and interrogates not only how but why we choose to represent who we do.
