Identifying Old and New Sources of Lapis Lazuli by GIA. The three major minerals that comprise lapis lazuli are lazurite, calcite and pyrite. Lazurite is the ingredient responsible for producing the prized lapis lazuli color—bright royal blue, or lapis blue. And have you ever wondered how to identify old and new sources of lapis lazuli? In this video, Sam Naseri discusses how after years of working with lapis lazuli, he’s learned about a procedure to help differentiate newer and older material. The video shows how high quality lapis pieces are used for jewelry, such as a lapis lazuli ring, and typically cut into cabochons, beads, inlays, or tablets. Interestingly enough, there are only two mines in the world where lapis lazuli can be found: one is in Chile, and the other Afghanistan.
