The slogan was given by Shastri in 1965 when India was facing a dual challenge of a Pakistani invasion and a severe food shortage.
Shastri motivated the soldiers to defend the country with courage and valour and encouraged the farmers to increase food production and reduce their dependence on imports.
The slogan became very popular among the masses and boosted the morale of the nation.
