The TR100 Tap remover is a fantastic tool to remove any size of tap, in this video we use a test block to simulate a small component that can be full submerged, you can however attach the equipment in situ and flush using a hose or even a water bottle to flush the electrode to prevent arcing.
Eurospark, a specialist in EDM, is the sole distributor of the TR100 in the UK. It has been sold throughout the UK, Ireland, and mainland Europe since the early 90s. Since that time it has been used in all manner of applications across all industries, from the Royal Navy to Formula One to a vehicle repair shop. Any company that needs to remove studs, drills, taps etc. has an application particularly on large components or those that require machining in situ saving the time involved in breaking down fixtures or machines. The TR100 is normally used on site within the existing set up.
There should also be no problem removing a larger tap. The chuck of the TR100 will take up to 6.5mm. For larger taps, the core can be sparked out with more than one cut so you can erode enough material to collapse the flutes.
A hex bar can also be sparked into the tap so that you can use an allen key to wind the tap out.
Larger diameter bar can also be used if you turn the end down to fit in the chuck – when using this method the machine will have to draw power to a larger surface area, which will take longer to spark, and also make the machine heat up faster. It is normal when using larger electrodes to also drill the middle out so the machine is not sparking such a big surface area.
As a few examples of time -
Sparking into mild steel set to 15mm deep
2.0mm electrode 4min 41sec 6.1mm actual depth
4.0mm electrode 9min 6sec 8.5mm actual depth
6.0mm electrode 16min 23sec 9.5mm actual depth
Sparking into 1/4" tap set to 15mm deep
4.0mm electrode 4min 40sec 11mm actual depth
Electrode wear into the tap was much less as the sparking is aided by additional flushing through the flutes of the tap
