Lesson on Tryptophan Degradation (Metabolism) and the Kynurenine Pathway. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid required for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Tryptophan can be degraded by the kynurenine pathway, which can be activated by stress and immunocytokines. Activation of the Kynurenine pathway can reduce the production of serotonin. Kynurenine metabolism will eventually lead to the production of the end metabolites quinolinic acid and picolinic acid. Quinolinic acid and the Kynurenine Pathway have been implicated in various psychiatric conditions including major depressive disorder, due to the reduction in serotonin production and function.
