STORYLINE:
Funerals were held on Monday for the victims of the rocket attack by Palestinian militants on the southern Israeli border town of Sderot.
Three-year-old Afik Zahavi, and 49-year-old Mordechai Yosopov were killed when militants fired a homemade Qassam rocket from Gaza - whose border is only three kilometres (2 miles) away - as parents dropped their children off at two nursery schools there early on Monday morning.
Afik's mother Ruthie was in critical condition at a hospital in the nearby city of Beersheba.
Ten other people were lightly injured in the attack, which was claimed by the radical Islamic group Hamas.
When the rocket hit, about 20 children were in the nursery schools.
Staff ushered them into bomb shelters where they remained until police gave them the all clear.
Teams of social workers arrived at the schools to console worried parents and staff, many of whom were in a state of shock.
After the attack, Sharon convened an emergency meeting of his security advisers - an indication he would seek special approval for harsh retaliation.
But he also told a closed-door meeting of legislators on Monday that he was determined to go ahead with the Gaza withdrawal, and he would speed up the voluntary evacuation of settlers by making compensation available soon.
The rockets fell just hours after Hamas and the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades blew up an Israeli army outpost in the heart of Gaza with hundreds of pounds (kilos) of explosives, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding five.
Sderot has been hit by dozens of Qassam rockets since the outbreak of fighting almost four years ago, but until now without casualties.
